To the recorded seminar The “No-Programming Theorem” asserts that perfect universal quantum processors cannot exist. These are hypothetical devices that execute a unitary gate that is choosable arbitrarily and itself provided as a (quantum) input.

Prof. David Gosset: "Fast simulation of planar Clifford circuits"

A general quantum circuit can be simulated in exponential time on a classical computer. If the circuit has a planar layout, then a tensor-network contraction algorithm due to Markov and Shi has a runtime exponential in the square root of its size, or more generally exponential in the treewidth of the underlying graph.

Dr. Yuval Ronen: "Fabry–Pérot quantum Hall interferometry in graphene"

Chiral, one-dimensional (1D) edge channels in the quantum Hall (QH) effect guide electrons dissipationless. Using quantum point contacts (QPCs) as beamsplitters, these 1D channels can be split and recombined, enabling interference of propagating electron wave functions.

In this talk I will offer an overview of my Oxford group’s recent work targetting NISQ (noisy intermediate scale quantum) devices. This is an area of tremendous interest at the moment as we are starting to see quantum devices at, or beyond, the practical limits of simulation power of today’s supercomputers. But of course the ability to build a machine that a conventional computer cannot simulate may be a long way from building something useful!

The normal state of high-temperature superconductors exhibits anomalous transport and spectral properties that are poorly understood. Cold atoms in optical lattices have been used to realize the celebrated Fermi-Hubbard model, widely believed to capture the essential physics of these materials.

Prof. Robert König: "Quantum advantage with noisy shallow circuits "

Prior work has shown that there exists a relation problem which can be solved with certainty by a constant-depth quantum circuit composed of geometrically local gates in two dimensions, but cannot be solved with high probability by any classical constant depth circuit composed of bounded fan-in gates. Here we provide two extensions of this result.

When applied to macroscopic scales, the unitarity of quantum mechanics leads to paradoxes such as Schrodinger's cat and Wigner's friend. The question of when and how superpositions of macroscopic states become "effectively measured" is fundamental in quantum mechanics.

Research of cavity quantum electrodynamics (CQED) has enabled new capabilities in quantum optics, quantum computation, and various quantum technologies. So far, all the work in this field has included light interacting with bound-electron systems such as atoms, quantum dots, and quantum circuits. In contrast, free-electron systems enable fundamentally different physical phenomena, as their energy distribution is continuous and not discrete, and allow for tunable transitions and selection rules.

Yuval Shagam won an ERC grant

Assistant Professor Yuval Shagam from the Schulich Faculty of Chemistry is a member of the Helen Diller Quantum Center. He focuses on understanding molecular chirality: a molecule or ion that cannot be superposed on its mirror image. Such molecules are often distinguished as either “right-handed” or “left-handed.” Molecular chirality plays a central role in many fields, ranging from reaction dynamics to drug development. Molecules of opposite-handedness, known as enantiomers, can have different smells and different medicinal properties among other things.
