The microscope was conceived as a “classical” instrument, long before the dawn of quantum mechanics. Similarly, the resolution limit of the microscope was derived by Ernst Abbe in 1873, implicitly assuming the wave nature of light. Nevertheless, the quantum nature of light can enable to us to supersede the capabilities of “classical” microscope provided appropriate excitation and detection schemes. This field of research, termed “quantum imaging”, was born out of the availability of modern technology enabling the implementation of such ideas about 15 years ago. This tutorial will review the progress made and some future pathways for quantum assisted microscopy.
