From the fractional quantum Hall effect, through spin liquids to quantum error correcting codes, understanding of topological order has been a major theme of condensed matter physics and quantum information theory in the last four decades. I will review the conventional formulation and ensuing signatures of topological order in pure quantum states. I will then describe recent progress in extending the notion to mixed states using ideas from quantum information theory and explain how they bear on the breakdown of topologically protected quantum memory.
