The research activity of Zohar Amitay and his group is in the field of experimental femtosecond spectroscopy. One research direction includes studies of coherent quantum control using intense shaped femtosecond pulses of gas-phase atoms and molecules. This direction is aimed at utilizing the coherent nature of femtosecond pulses in order to actively control and direct the photo-excited quantum system to desired states, optimizing the outcome of chemical and physical processes. Another research direction includes the investigations of strong-field optical excitation of semiconductor nanocrystals. It primarily focuses on studying the generation of multiple excitons within the same nanocrystal and their ultrafast dynamics. All the research directions are of both fundamental scientific importance as well as technological significance for various novel optically-related applications. The laboratory of Zohar Amitay is equipped with state-of-the-art femtosecond laser systems, and combines ultrafast laser and optical techniques with spectroscopy and vacuum tools.
